  Endnote

  1. In June 1944 a group of French résistants disguised as Milice marched into the Propaganda Ministry in the rue Solferino in Paris – now the HQ of the French Socialist Party – and shot Philippe Henriot dead as he reached the bottom of the stairs. Rumour has it that this murder was orchestrated by SOE and carried out by an SOE agent. But the rumour has never been confirmed.

Noreen Riols was born in Malta of English parents, and lives with her French husband in a seventeenth-century house in a village near Versailles.
